Cloud City.

Tomás Saraceno exhibit, entitled “Cloud Cities,” consists of twenty bubbles suspended in a hangar in Germany. Many of the spheres are large enough to be entered by visitors who may bounce, roll, jump. lay, & imagine themselves in a different world whilst in these transparent bubbles. A criss-crossing network of cables keeps the giant balloons aloft. Guests feel as they are floating. I'd like this exhibit to come to America!

Can you see why it's called this??

David Jameson Architect Inc. was definitely inspired by the actual look of barcodes for this house located in Washington D.C. The steel bars down the side reflect that of an actual barcode. The are along the front facade of the building as well.

Lots of light entering this building! Not very private either. I think this would be a better business building rather than residential.

The video this week comes from the band Neon Indian. This music video for their cyber-track "Polish Girl," off their new album Era Extraña, incorporates light painting to tell the story of a disjointed personal journey.

This is related to my Halloween because I'm going to be a Polish Future Girl!!! haha ;-) I'm already a polish girl so the futuristic part is just what I need achieve now! Hi, I'm Susi and I write for Design Shuffle, a social media site that brings together designers from around the world to share projects and find inspiration. I love visiting design blogs like The Modern Life for inspiration, so I'm very happy to be guest blogging here today. My post is all about modern lighting and how it has a strong graphic look that works well in today's interior designs in modern and contemporary spaces. I love all the strong geometric shapes in modern lighting.

The I Lucci Argentati suspension light is more sculpture than fixture. This free form shaped hanging light would look amazing in a dining room.

Black pendant lights offer a graphic punch in this predominately white contemporary space. The black relates nicely to the dark floors. Love the reflective gold inside the shades.

The Phrena lamp is made from folded Tyvek material but has the feeling of layers of chiffon. Gorgeous as a table lamp or pendant light.

A round or circular light adds a nice graphic pop above a rectangular table. It's always nice to mix geometric shapes in a room for dynamic interest.

Drum shades on pendants are a great geometric shape for lighting in modern living room designs. Adding circles and cut outs to the drum shade creates more graphic impact.

The Tango light by Corbett has a big graphic impact with cut out lines in the bronze globe. This pendant light would create amazing shadows on the walls.

Specialty lighting is essential in kitchen designs. Using half clear glass and half white glass gives a nice graphic quality to this sleek industrial style kitchen light. The globe shape adds curving lines to the sleek space.

Black and white stripes give this pendant light a very graphic look. Shades with geometric patterns, like stripes or dots, have a modern graphic look that works well in a contemporary interior design.

I guarantee you have never seen footwear concepts like that of Brazilian designer Andreia Chaves...

Chaves thinks beyond what is normal & breaks into an abstract world of fashion that has never existed before... until now.

"“The Invisible Shoe” has a mirrored surface, creating a deceptively obscured optical effect with every step taken. The chameleon-like façade blends in perfectly with any environment."

I particularly like what Chaves calls the "Naked" version of the Invisible Shoe.

I love the geometric body structure.

"“The Prism Shoe” is a fascinating structural design that by itself looks like an intricate work of origami – casting beautiful kaleidoscopic shadows against the ground. Here we can clearly see Chaves’ chaotic - yet orderly - paradox coming to life through her shoe designs, resulting in dramatic silhouette."

The “Form & Texture Shoe” exhibits a disciplined study of form and material while keeping just enough chaos to stay interesting. The contradiction here is the seemingly indestructible framework fused with the disorderly arranged leather and sycamore wood cubes. The contours create a theatrical statement nothing short of impressive.

"Chaves finds it thrilling how each particular material has the power to completely change someone’s vision about a design. An example for this, she sites, is the idea of a sandal made with simple Velcro strips (see “THE VELCRO SHOE” below) holding the foot, where you can easily change its shape, redesigning it and creating sculptures in air."

This unique furniture piece by Malagana is sure to surprise & amuse! It's modules can be stacked on top of one another without the use of tools or hardware & can be put together in less than 5 minutes. MÖBIUS is a sculpture that can be configured into many cyclical patterns and behave as though it is eating itself, whilst sinking into the ground. The result is an optical illusion and a time-lapse of people interacting with the sculpture and moving through Melbourne's landmark location throughout the day.MÖBIUS was animated over two weeks Friday, Saturday & Sunday between the 6th - 20th of May 2011.

Wall-less House

The Wall-less House by Tezuka Architects

In 2000, Tokyo based architects created this 2,650 square three-story home in Setagaya-ku, one of the 23 special districts of Tokyo, Japan. The best part of the house is the ground floor level with no walls!

“This large site in a dense residential neighborhood provides a rare opportunity to open the house completely to the landscape and environment, like a retreat villa in the countryside."

"Occupying only 20% of the site, the house leaves ample space around it for a truly open, continuous space, a wall-less house."

"Using a lightweight steel, load bearing frame structure, the axial loads are distributed through only a utility core in the center and two thin columns, therefore opening the living space to the outside completely on all sides."

"The floors thus float in air, surrounded by the trees for greenery and privacy.”

Everything about this looks amazing to me..... MINUS the bug factor. Not sure how many insects or bugs are in Tokyo, but that's the only issue I would have with this open-air home.

I'm visiting Portland right now & it's quite the environmental friendly location! I'm loving every minute so far.

Makes me wonder if a concept such as this oxygenated notebook could become a reality one day. Especially in Portland! :)

The Plantbook has a battery charging system that is inspired by the water-soaking abilities of the bamboo!

The designers, Seunggi Baek & Hyerim Kim, explain, “The system uses an external water tank, hence the Plantbook continuously absorbs water when soaking it in water and generates electrolysis using power stored in a solar heat plate installed on the top. In this process, it is operated using hydrogen as energy source and discharges oxygen. If you put it into a water bottle while you don’t use the laptop, it automatically charges a battery and discharges oxygen. A leaf-shaped strap hanging on the top is made with silicon. It plays a role of a hand ring and a green LED indicates when the battery is charged. Using this LED, users can check how much spare capacity the batter has.”

Yana K - exclusive interview & preview!

I had the privilege of attending a mixer the other night for the preview of a new line by an incredible designer...

Yana K.

Yana K (pictured above in one of her own pieces) is bringing her unique designs to Las Vegas! Originally from Russia, she has now relocated to the Los Angeles area where she opened her first boutique in 2003. I was honored to be able to sit down with her and ask her a few questions about her goals and her line.

Yana is determined to bring new fashion to Las Vegas and expose this melting pot of a city to something brand new and exciting! She wants to "test the limits." Inspired by generational businesses such as Coco Chanel, Yana says, “it's all about the perfect time, at the perfect place, in the perfect moment.”

One goal for her line is to revisit the past in fashion and put her own twist to it. Yana mentioned that she wants to bring the 60s & 70s retro look back and create designs that make it fashionable to wear a maxi dress to a club but most importantly for ladies to feel glamorous all the time. Her mission is for all women to feel like celebrities every single time they go out, to feel as if they are starring in their own movie.

Yana is proud to have her name representing her art. "At the end of the day, it's your name." She says that in the past ten years, her clothing line has matured to what it is now. "Longevity is the key. Yana K will be here 20 years from now!” she says with strong passion. She is a perfectionist and this is her craft. Fashion is a lifestyle for Yana, and her goal is to make women feel more beautiful, feel more passionate, and exude more love.

I think Las Vegas is ready for this love Yana is offering! <3

Designed by ARM ( Ashton Raggatt McDougall), the K house is located at Surf Coast Victoria, Australia. ARM is a firm of architects known for “architectural outspokenness”. This is very true depicted by the project below. This house was named after the first letter of the owners’ last name. The shape of the house and some items inside the home took the shape of the letter “K “. There are reoccurring cherry red color accents throughout the that home brightens it up. Acquavilla

Acquavilla constructed by Winn Wittman Architecture is located in Austin, Texas.

It is a renovation of a mid-80's wreck.

According to the architects, the residence was developed in a way that reflects the whimsical personality of the owner.

The original facade is enriched by a custom-designed metal panel system with interesting leaf motives. This pattern is reoccurring throughout the property at unique places, such as glass doors or windows.

The pool- which seems to blend with the nearby lake- is probably this building’s most alluring feature.

(notice the leaf motif above on the overhang)

The interiors are highly modern and each room is invaded by light.

There is a pleasant mix of color, light and shades which gives this home its unique atmosphere and contributes to its overall feminine look. What did you think of this home? I think I would have changed some of the furniture choices but the construction is incredible!

Modern Wedding Debut!!

I attended a wedding of two of my good friends this past weekend. I had so much fun and was so inspired by their choice of wedding accessories that I decided to do a post about it!

Feathers are certainly the new trend lately, we see them all over. Especially peacock feathers, but throw it into the wedding mix and you have a new modern spin on things!! I have never been to a wedding where someone has incorporated feathers into the theme until this last wedding and it looked incredible! I didn't take many up close pictures at the wedding but did some research on this trend and this is what I found...

What do you think of this peacock theme? I, of course, love it since I'm obsessed with wearing all kinds of feathers! :)

Juxtaposition Art

English conceptual artist John Stezaker creates interesting juxtaposition art by combining old photographs and postcards. His works were just recently displaced at the Whitechapel Gallery in London.

"Taking classic movie stills, vintage postcards and book illustrations, Stezaker makes collages to give old images a new meaning. By adjusting, inverting and slicing separate pictures together to create unique new works of art, Stezaker explores the subversive force of found images. Stezaker’s famous Mask series fuses the profiles of glamorous sitters with caves, hamlets, or waterfalls, making for images of eerie beauty."

Art historian Julian Stallabrass said, "The contrast at the heart of these works [by Stezaker] is not between represented and real, but between the unknowing primitives of popular culture, and the conscious, ironic artist and viewer of post-modern images."

DIY Table Vase

So if you have a thin wood table that you don't mind drilling holes in, I thought this DIY table vase was rather unique and interesting!

I personally think that 3 down the table would be cooler than just the one, but that's personal preference. You could also do this with a side table or coffee table.

So here's an interesting one for you.
This particular film, Between Bears by Eran Hilleli, was the winner of Best Animation Award at the First Vimeo Film Festival.

I'm not exactly sure what to gather from this. I was a little thrown off in the beginning when the bear shaves himself and his hair turns into butterflies... but that may just be me. haha Although, I do think the animation is so very unique and interesting to watch.

The director says this about the story line of this video... "It is a debt to my childhood and other lives I hope I lived. Inspired by words of songs that I admire."

Anyone have any thoughts they would like to share on this?

I really enjoy this collection because it blurs the line between our reality world and our dream world. It's though provoking, but also functional at the same time. What do you think?

FAMILY DWELLING IN CABRERA DE MAR: BARCELONA

Formal and conceptual simplicity, two prisms placed one above the other, with a slightly displaced movement of the top prism, creating an immense overhang and an interior fissure.

Floating stairwell in the middle of room adds a unique touch. I also like the wall of glass separating the kitchen from the living room.

The wall color looks great alongside the stainless steel kitchen.

What did you like about this house??

I could definitely see myself living in a place like this! :)

Alright!! It's Easter time this weekend people! I really do enjoy this time of year. Nice weather, decorating eggs, good candy, especially Peeps! & don't worry... not like those cute little ones above. :)

DIY Easter Project - Grass in Eggs!

If yesterday's post on the "Egg-Bot" seemed a little too extreme for egg decorating... try this unique DIY Easter project!

Growing Grass in Eggs!!!

Here's how to do it....

There are two ways to get a good egg shell for planting in. You can use either hard boiled eggs or raw eggs but you must make sure that your egg shell is going to be deep enough to hold a substantial amount of soil. So the trick is to crack them really close to the top of the shell leaving a nice deep cavity for planting in. Give the shells a quick rinse and you are ready to move on to the next step of filling them with your potting soil. Using an all purpose potting soil fill a bowl with it and mix in a really generous amount of water so that it is good and wet, not just damp.

With your shells all set up in your egg carton to keep them upright start to spoon in little bits of potting soil at a time until they are about a centimeter from the top of the shell.

Once you have your egg shells filled with soil you can take your grass or wheat seeds and place a solid layer of them inside the egg shell so that they completely cover up the potting soil. The last step is to cover them again with just enough wet potting soil to cover the seeds. You don't want to put to much on or it will take longer for the grass shoots to come through. Place your eggs right in the egg carton in a spot where it is guaranteed to be warm all of the time and in a couple of days the grass will start to sprout up. If you want to prolong the life of your grass you can give it a little trim every couple of days as well :)

Have fun creating some unique plant stands for them to! The above ones we created by twisting copper wiring around to make a little cup holder and then fashioned some chick look alike feet. You can also use pipe cleaners or the dying sticks from the dye kits for stands.

Another cool thing you could do is dye the eggs first, then use the colored shell as the planter!

The Eggbot is an open-source art robot that can draw on spherical or egg-shaped objects from the size of a ping pong ball size to that of a small grapefruit.
